Your patient has been identified as being able to swallow PO dosage forms. The Zithromax IV that is ordered for your patient can be safely switched to PO. A switch from IV to PO Zithromax is associated with a cost savings of $21/day.

According to the Zithromax package insert:

500 mg IV Q24h should be switched to 500 mg PO Q24h after 2 days of IV therapy for treatment of community acquired pneumonia.

500 mg IV Q24h should be switched to 250 mg PO Q24h after 2 days of IV therapy for the treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease.
